Hole-in-One

Early on Halloween, I had on a golfer costume. It turned into quite a trick for me.

I shot an Ace, a Hole-in-One. It is rare. I am an amateur and not playing well.

Being that I had a stroke on June 8, 2020, I blamed my terrible golf because of my Aphasia. My wife told me that Aphasia wasn’t the problem because I wasn’t playing well before I had the stroke.

In early July after my stroke in 2020, my son convinced me to go to the golf range to hit some balls. It was terrible and I did not think I would be able to do it again.

My therapy teams told me to go out and play. I blamed Aphasia for not going to play golf.

I went to the Five Iron Golf indoor golf simulation to take a lesson and hit some balls. It was difficult to get my coordination back on the golf range to play again. After about three weeks I felt that I might be able to do it again.

Finally, in September, my wife drove me to the golf course for the first time since I could not drive yet. Jerry Haas, one of my friends from my high school, joined me to play at Torresdale Golf in Philadelphia. It was great to play again and I played as much as I could after that.

Over 510 days after my stroke,  October 31, 2021, I played golf with friends at Torresdale. It was a bit chilly but not too bad. It was a terrible day for the first nine holes. I shot a 50.

The back nine was better. I started with a bogie on the 10th and a double bougie on the 11th. On the 12th and 13th, I had a par.

On the 14th hole, a par 3 about 160 yards, uphill. My partners, Ken, Ed S, and Jim, and I walked up to the tee. I said “Since I normally hit a hybrid on this one, I leave it about 40 yards low, so today I am going to hit the driver”. I went first, and I hit a straight shot on the left-hand side and Ken said “looks like a good shot”. I said, “I hope it is over the trap”. It made it and hit the green. It started to roll to the right toward the hole. Ken started to yelling “It’s going into the hole”. We thought it was going to be close. Ken started screaming “It’s in the hole”. It looked like it couldn’t possibly have gone in. Perhaps it’s behind the flag so we couldn’t see the ball. One of the guys on the 13th fairway started yelling “It’s in the hole”. We were pretty excited and I wasn’t going to believe it until I could see it.

I walked up, looked in the hole, and there it was

What a day! I almost didn’t want to finish the four holes left. I did and ended up with a 43 on the back nine.
